Last week at OJH, Mrs. Luker's Texas History classes engaged in a friendly competition with Mrs. Wilson's and Coach Shores’s classes to see which grade could donate the most items to benefit local nursing homes. Our outstanding junior high students brought in over 1,000 Christmas gifts, surpassing last year’s goal by over 200. The "Bobcat Blessings" were given to Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, providing each resident several gifts. Great job, Bobcats!

The holiday spirit was in full swing at OJH this week as our amazing staff participated in a Secret Santa gift exchange! 🎁 From thoughtful presents to unexpected surprises, everyone was filled with joy and gratitude. A huge thank you to Jaden Gomez, who played the role of Santa’s biggest helper, working behind the scenes to make sure the magic happened! Of course, Jaden didn’t go it alone—special thanks to his wonderful elf side kicks: Ashley Morphew, Keely Kole, and Emily Copeland, of our complex needs classroom who worked tirelessly to make this holiday season extra special for all of us. 🌟 From our OFAM to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🎅🏼🎉

OJH Boys Basketball: Last night the Bobcats had one last set of games before the Christmas Break. The St. Anne’s wildcats came to town for two A team games. The 7th graders and “Battle Axe” Barbay went first winning easily 41-19. They started out sluggish in this one as defensively they seemed a bit lost now that one of their players went down last week. After the half they finally figured it out only allowing the Wildcats to score 1 point. Jax Walker led the way in scoring with 10 having a great night finding his mid range jumper. Landon Agerton was right behind him with 9 and just as many steals and rebounds. Larsen Richard and Eli Ford Alleman each had 6 to round out the offense. Defensively, the whole team played well smothering the Wildcat guards with pressure. The 8th graders were looking for a rematch from last year trying to stay sharp before the break. Unfortunately, they started out slow and dug themselves a hole that they couldn't get out of. They lost this one 37-58. Offensively everyone scored but leaders were Easton Locke with 8 and Kaysen Click with 6. For some reason the Bobcats hesitated to shoot the open shot in the first half and a clipboard paid the price for it in the first quarter. In the second half the Bobcats started to shoot and hit five 3 pointers in the second half to close the gap with St. Anne’s. After the break the Bobcats will travel to Buna to look at finishing off a district championship run as both teams still have a shot at it.

Orangefield Junior High is home to the hardest-working staff in Texas! Our faculty work tirelessly to provide a safe, effective learning environment for each and every student. Many of our faculty received nominations for this spotlight, but we want to take the time to specifically highlight one of our hardest workers: Nancy Edwards. Mrs. Edwards runs all around our building every day looking for students to work with. Her caring approach to education makes all that she does that more worthy of recognition. It is clear that Mrs. Edwards still has a love for educating and mentoring our students. Thank you Mrs. Edwards for your continued hard work!

OJH Boys Basketball: Last night, the Bobcats traveled to Kountze for 3 games with the 8th B team not having a team to compete against. The Cats were looking to fix the mistakes from last week and continue sweeping their district opponents. Coach Babin’s (Dababinator15) group took the floor first and it was all gas and no brakes for them. They cruised to a 22-2 win on the back of solid team defense and finishing around the rim. Kamden Smith-Slagle led the offense with 7 points early on with Ainsley Skibo dropping 5 more to help the cause. Liam Williams and Skibo each had a handful of steals as they smothered the Lion guards with pressure. The 7th grade A group started off rocky not sure of their positioning and rotation on the press but quickly found their footing and continued their dominant ways. This group won 44-12 and didn’t allow Kountze to score the entire second half. Landon Agerton led the way with 14 got steals and rebounds at will which he converted to easy layups. Lexon Detwiler was nipping at his heels with 13 dominating the middle of the press and getting several assist as the defense collapsed around him. Larsen Richard decided to show out tonight as he dropped 8 with some great defense and easy layups. Finally, the 8th grade squad was looking to regroup after a sloppy showing last week in Anahuac. It was a shocking turn around and they looked much sharper as they cycled through the offense and cut down on the unforced turnovers. Winning easily 50-13, the Cats made it a team win as almost all scored and contributed in some way. Keaton Leonard led the way with 10 points and Kaysen Click, Kaleb Flory, and Austin Erickson each had 8. The new defense and offense seemed to fit this squad a little better than what was being run the last game and the extra practice time seems to pay off. Next week the 7th A and 8th A will squeeze in one more game against St. Anne’s at home before the Christmas break.
