2nd grade students enjoyed their annual Pumpkin Pancakes breakfast yesterday. They also enjoyed spending the day mingling with other classes for the Turkey Trot and completed fun fall activities and games before the Thanksgiving break!

Kindergarten enjoyed their class Thanksgiving feast yesterday! They shared what they have in their lives that make them happy. They also wrote a class recipe book on “How to Cook a Thanksgiving Turkey.” I hope you pick one to try out for your own family Thanksgiving this year!

Just a reminder- Tomorrow OES will dismiss at 1:00 pm. Due to the early release and limited space, we will not be hosting lunch visitors. Also, tomorrow students may wear hats and/or pajamas for $2. We hope that you all have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Third grade students at OES attended a field trip to the Lutcher Theater for a live puppet performance of "Earth's Dinosaur Zoo Live". Students were able to go back through time to prehistoric Australia and meet some very amazing life-like dinosaurs and other creatures! This was all brought to life by an awesome team of puppeteers. Students learned about the diet, ecosystems, and behaviors of several dinosaurs from prehistoric times. Dinosaurs such as the Stegosaurus and T-Rex made their appearance during the show!

Ayla Merendino (OHS class of 2022) is participating in a Junior Achievement program through her Lamar University education class. Ayla has spent the past few Wednesday afternoons with Mrs. Ponfick's second grade class. Ayla has reviewed wants and needs with the class as well as introduced terms like consumer and producer. The students "opened" their own online pizza business that taught them the importance of following directions and doing things right the first time. The amount of money made was determined by each student's accuracy when completing the pizza orders! Thank you, Miss Ayla!

The Kiwanis Club of Orange donated $500 to Orangefield Elementary to purchase books for students to add to their home libraries. We appreciate their willingness to help OISD students succeed.

OES Parents- Fall picture retakes are tomorrow morning! Please remember to bring your best smile! 😃

Today, Mrs. Lanier, Ms. Tracie, Mrs. Kristy, and Mrs. Baca, made monster munch with both Pre-K classes to complete our week learning all about the letter Mm. They also created their very own big, green monster. The children were all smiles on Monster Day!

Spotlighting Kaydance Whitfield who is in the Junior Achievement program, at Lamar University. She has been coming to Mrs. Long's kindergarten class each Thursday teaching lessons about needs and wants. They have also talked about earning money and even got to take home their very own bank box.

Friday Readers is a long standing tradition at OES. This community service program has been going on for over 20 years. High school players come over during their athletic period of home football games to visit our Elementary classrooms. This program has created lasting bonds between players, students and staff. We would like to thank them for their committed service to OES and wish them luck in the playoffs!

On Halloween, Mrs. Mendoza’s, Ms. King’s and Mrs. Abshire’s 5th grade classes simulated what it was like to live in Salem, Massachusetts/Colonial America during the time of the Witch Trials. As they navigated through different humorous slides, their answers determined whether or not they were being accused. If 12 or more suspected you it could be enough to put you on trial. They followed the lesson up with a game where the students had to mix, mingle and interrogate one another to find out who was a witch, teaching the kids that no one in Salem was actually a witch. Everyone just believed what they'd been told. Teaching the kids how easy it is to divide a community. Shunning, scapegoating and dividing destroys far more than it protects.

Pre-K enjoyed pumpkin time with the Principal. Ms. Fuller read a book about pumpkins and they carved one together! They had a Happy Halloween!

If your child participated in the school fundraiser, items will be delivered to the elementary tomorrow, Thursday, November 2, and may be picked up beginning at 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Please drive up to the front of the school and someone will get your student's items for you. No items will be sent home with students.

Tonight, at the November board meeting, the board and Dr. McAlpin recognized our November Students and Employee of the Month.

🧡🩷To celebrate the end of October, students are encouraged to wear a Halloween shirt/dress or “pink out” to support the fight against cancer on October 31st. However, any students wanting to wear costumes may do so, however no blood, gore, masks, or face paint will be allowed. Thank you!🩷🧡

First grade Alien Day! First graders ended their 'Objects In The Sky' science unit with an out of this world celebration! Their Ready Set Teach students were also able to join in on the space activities.

Mrs. Stelly’s first grade class had a visitor from Lamar University. Miss Rosie is currently enrolled in an educator prep course at Lamar. She is required to observe a classroom and teach the Junior Achievement program. Today was her first JA lesson and the students loved it! It is a wonderful opportunity when we get to support future educators. Mrs. Stelly’s class is looking forward to her future lessons.

First graders have been learning about computational thinking in their technology rotation. It's a way to understand a problem by breaking it down into smaller parts and creating steps to solve it. Students used this skill in an unplugged coding activity. They made a path for a Halloween character to reach a cupcake, but had to avoiding spider webs!
