Approximately 60 fourth graders were recognized for meeting their AR goals during the first six weeks of school. To celebrate, students enjoyed an outdoor lunch and refreshing ice cream floats. While they receive at least 10 minutes of independent reading time in class each day, they are also expected to read for at least 20 minutes each evening as part of their homework. These students rose to the challenge and succeeded!

Last week, students at Orangefield Elementary joined children and adults around the world in celebrating creativity, courage, and collaboration through International Dot Day. Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot, this event encourages innovation, self-discovery, and confidence.

OES Librarian, Kaycie Donnaud, shared the story with classes and encouraged students to “make their mark” to help make the world a more colorful and wonderful place.

This week, Mrs. Wolfford's third graders learned all about how a courtroom works through the reading of the story, "The Trial of Cardigan Jones." To bring the story to life, they toured the Orange County Courthouse, where students met with the Court Coordinator and Judge Mandy White-Rogers. They were able to observe a real courtroom, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of how trials are conducted.

Students also put their new knowledge into action during our very own Mock Trial: "The Case of the Missing Candy Bar." Students took on the roles of judge, bailiff, attorneys, witnesses, and jury members as they practiced critical thinking, speaking, and listening skills while connecting literature to real-world experiences. Thankfully, the trial ended with the accused being found NOT GUILTY of taking the candy bar!

It's always a great day to be a Bobcat!

Fall Picture Day

DOW Sabine River Operations recently awarded Orangefield Elementary a $2,500 grant to enhance STEAM opportunities for students. The funding was used to purchase LEGO sets that students will explore during their technology rotation.

Students will use LEGO Education SPIKE Essential Set kits to design and build creations that can be coded to move, light up, and respond to sensors. The LEGO Education STEAM Park sets allow younger students to explore basic engineering, cause and effect, and storytelling as they build interactive amusement park rides and scenes. Additionally, versatile LEGO building sets were added to inspire open-ended design challenges and creative problem-solving.

Orangefield Elementary is grateful for DOW Sabine River Operations' generosity and commitment to supporting hands-on, innovative learning experiences for our students.

Fourth-grade math students have been learning to add and subtract decimals. To make the lesson more engaging, teachers organized a fun “Casa Olé Day.” Students enjoyed queso and salsa while using a restaurant-style menu to solve real-world word problems involving decimals.
